An FIR has been registered against Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring for allegedly making casteist remarks against former Union Home Minister late Buta Singh. The case was filed based on a complaint by Buta Singh’s son, Sarabjot Singh Sidhu.

The Punjab Congress chief has been booked under Sections 353 and 196 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, along with Sections 3(1)(u) and 3(1)(v) of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.

Warring had allegedly made a remark about the skin colour of the late politician while campaigning in support of the Congress candidate for the Tarn Taran assembly bypoll, scheduled to take place on November 11.

After facing flak, the Congress leader on Monday tendered an “unconditional apology” and said that Buta Singh, a veteran Congress leader, was like a father figure to him, and he could never mean any disrespect to him.

Giving Justification for his remarks, Warring said that his remarks about the politician were meant to portray Congress as an inclusive party, which provides a chance to everyone, based on merit and efficiency and does not discriminate against anyone in the name of caste, creed, or religion.

“… I reiterate and reaffirm my unconditional apology if anyone has felt hurt,” he remarked.

On the other hand, the Punjab State SC Commission sought an explanation from the District Election Officer for not restricting Warring’s entry into the constituency ahead of the poll in accordance with the model code of conduct in force.

On Tuesday, Punjab Congress leaders slammed the rival parties for trying to “politicise and distort” Warring’s remarks. The Punjab Congress’ SC wing chairman, Kuldeep Singh Vaid, who is also a relative of late Buta Singh, defended Warring, saying he had made the remarks in a positive context.

Meanwhile, religious Sikh organisations demanded strict action in the matter. Furthermore, the Punjab Police have begun an investigation, while the Punjab State SC panel took suo motu notice of Warring’s remarks and asked him to appear before it on November 6.
